What Causes Bad Breath?

10 May

More than 80 million people suffer from bad breath, or what is known medically as chronic halitosis. Though it's a common condition, there was ways to control it and even prevent it.

First let's go through the most common reasons for bad breath. One of the causes of halitosis is stomach ulcers or refluxes. Check with your gastroenterologist if you have any of these conditions and simple medication can treat it and remove your bad breath. Unsurprisingly, dental issues such as gum diseases can cause bad breath as well; this is why it's important to visit your dentist every 6 months for cleaning and a check up.

As far as non-medical conditions, the biggest cause for bad breath is consuming certain foods with intense smells such as onion and garlic and the best way to remove that smell is by brushing your teeth, rinsing with a strong mouth wash, and scraping your tongue. Another reason is alcohol and tobacco. The easiest solution to that is to cut off these habits from your daily life or get deep cleaning at your dentist to remove the tartar and the chemicals that stain your teeth. Also, an empty stomach can enhance bad breath smell and bad taste in your mouth due to the acids build up in your stomach. A solution to that is to chew sugarless gum or candy.

A trick to keeping your breath fresh between meals, is to snack on certain vegetables and fruits such as celery and carrots to get rid of all remaining bacteria from pervious meals and keep your mouth moist.
